What former students are saying about Singing for Women!
Zarifah has an amazing talent for making women feel comfortable with their voice. I thoroughly enjoyed her class and feel much more relaxed with my voice. It helped me in expressing myself in other areas of my life as well. - Margy Campbell
I first took a class called Singing for Women Who Think They Can't Sing from Zarifah in the early 2000s - I was stunned to find that, under her instruction, I could actually hit the right notes, sing in tune with others, and, for the first time in my life, ENJOY singing! A few years later, I had the chance to - twice - take her class again. She is a skilled and supportive instructor, while still challenging you to reach for your best work. I loved her classes, and the practice mp3's I got as a result. Anyone who's ever doubted their ability to sing should take her class! You will love lifting up your voice! - Judy McKenzie
I wanted to let you know how wonderful your singing classes have been for me. I went from feeling I had a horrible voice to learning that I could match pitches and sing a number of notes just fine. Even better, a group of my friends has started singing together. This is something I always wanted to do and now it's happening! And it never would have happened without this class. Your gentle patience and encouragement was just what was needed. - Pamela Malo
Music has always been an important element in my life and I've wished that I could sing along with my favorite songs or sing in a choir or just sing for the fun of it; however, I always thought that only certain people had that talent. When I read about Zarifah Spain's class, "Singing for Women Who Think They Can't Sing," I thought I might check it out. With fear and trepidation I went to the first class thinking that I might or might not attend the second one. I left that first session feeling that I could not wait for the next one. Zarifah opens her students' awareness to the fact that each one does have a voice and that she can learn techniques to help her realize and express it. Zarifah creates a space of encouragement where her students can feel safe as they meet the challenges of learning this new skill. This set of classes was a life-altering experience for me. - Elizabeth Dorrell
All of my life I had been very self-conscious of my singing voice. Even as a kid my voice needed improvement -- in a second grade school play each child had a solo to sing, but I was assigned a dance! I always said I would take voice lessons "some day". Then I saw a flyer for Zarifah's class "Singing for Women Who Can't Sing" and I knew I better sign up. Now I feel fine singing in church and can belt out "Happy Birthday" at parties and feel fine. I'm not destined for the Opera, but it's nice to be able to sing with others. It was a small amount of time, money and energy for a nice bit of self-improvement. - Leah R.
There was not much music at home when I was growing up. One grandfather was in a Barbershop quartet, but he lived far away. I decided in my junior year of high school to join the ‘no audition – everyone welcome’ chorus, and learned a lot. When I auditioned for senior year, I got in to a girls’ double quartet, and really enjoyed our learning and performance experiences. After high school, I just sort of drifted away from it. 50 years later, I met Zarifah Spain, and everything changed! I didn’t have a lot of hope, to tell you the truth, in part because of hearing loss and some health issues such as chemotherapy over the years. Watching Zarifah teach at our local Dances of Universal Peace, I knew that this class was my best shot. And it worked. With her kindness, expertise, and gentle guidance, she makes you believe it can and will happen. I stayed with the classes for over two years, and would still be going if she hadn’t moved away. Now, I’m drumming, too – what a happy change in my life! - Carol Plaia
